Day 1 | Arrival in Lima, Peru

Welcome to the enchanting land of Peru! Day 2 | Cusco, Ancient Landmarks tour

A land transfer takes you to the airport for a flight to Cusco.  Upon arrival, a representative is waiting to take you to your hotel.  This afternoon we explore the archaeological marvels of Cusco, the historical capital of South America. Wander through the enchanting cobblestone streets adorned with original Inca walls, immersing yourself in the rich tapestry of history and culture.

Our adventure begins with a visit to the Santo Domingo Church, an architectural masterpiece built atop the ancient foundations of the Inca Temple of Koricancha. Delve into the mystical atmosphere of this sacred site dedicated to the worship of the Sun God.  Next, ascend to the San Cristobal viewpoint, offering a breathtaking panorama of Cusco’s skyline. Capture the city’s beauty from this vantage point, a haven for photography enthusiasts seeking to capture the essence of the Imperial City from diverse angles.

Continuing our journey, we venture to the awe-inspiring Sacsayhuaman Archaeological Site, a formidable fortress and ceremonial complex showcasing the military prowess of the Inca civilization. Marvel at its imposing structures while soaking in panoramic vistas of the city below.  Our exploration then leads us to the tranquil Inca Baths of Tambomachay, where ancient rituals and ceremonies once took place amidst natural springs.

Concluding our tour, we visit the iconic Main Plaza of Cusco to admire the majestic Cathedral, a testament to Spanish colonial architecture adorned with intricate silverwork. Explore its grandeur and historical significance as our guide shares insights into its construction and legacy.  After an enriching day of discovery, we return to your hotel, filled with memories of Cusco’s fascinating past and architectural wonders.  Overnight at Inkaterra La Casona.

Day 3 | Cusco, Textile Center, Pisac Ruins & Ollantaytambo Ruins

Embark on an enriching journey through the heart of the Andean culture, beginning with a visit to an Andean textile center. Here, you’ll have the unique opportunity to immerse yourself in the Quipucamayoc experience led by Master Sulca. Engage in a hands-on workshop where you’ll learn to create your very own “Quipu,” a symbolic instrument deeply rooted in Incan history and culture. Gain insight into its significance and symbolism as you craft your masterpiece, departing with a newfound appreciation for Andean textiles and traditions. Explore the Textile Museum and discover the fascinating world of camelids in the adjacent area.

Next, venture to the Pisac archaeological complex, a mesmerizing collection of Incan ruins nestled amidst the breathtaking landscape of the Sacred Valley. Conclude your day with a visit to the legendary Incan fortress and citadel of Ollantaytambo. Learn about the historic clash between Manco Inca’s forces and Hernando Pizarro’s troops in 1537, as you explore the ancient ruins.

Day 4 | On the way to Soraypampa – Start of the Salkantay Trek

Following an early breakfast, your guide and driver will promptly collect you from your hotel in Cusco. Our first destination is the Quillarumiyoc archaeological site, a significant stop on our route to the mountain village of Mollepata. Delight in a delectable lunch at El Pedregal, an idyllic farmhouse nestled in the heart of the village, where you’ll have the opportunity to gain insights into local agriculture and livestock practices.

Following lunch, embark on a scenic journey along the winding mountain road to Challacancha. From there, commence your hike towards our renowned Salkantay Lodge at Soraypampa, tracing the picturesque path known as the “Camino Real” (Royal Path).

Please note: While we highly encourage guests to participate in the hike for continued altitude acclimatization, those who prefer may opt for transportation directly to Salkantay Lodge.  Overnight at Salkantay Lodge.  Altitude (12,690’ / 3,869m), Trekking Time: Approximately 3 hours, Hiking Level: Easy to Moderate

Day 5 | Hike to Lake Humantay

Following breakfast, embark on an ascent up the slopes bordering the plateau behind Salkantay Lodge*. After approximately an hour and a half, your perseverance will be rewarded with the breathtaking sight of the lake’s shimmering turquoise waters and the imposing Humantay glacier towering above. Upon reaching this serene destination, take a moment to unwind, savor a light snack, find solace in the tranquility of this enchanting locale, and partake in a traditional ceremony honoring “la Pachamama” (Mother Earth). Upon your return descent to the lodge, the Salkantay team will warmly welcome you with a delicious hot lunch. The afternoon invites leisurely pursuits, whether it be unwinding, indulging in a rejuvenating massage, or luxuriating in the outdoor hot tub, offering a splendid vista of the Salkantay Peak against the backdrop of a stunning sunset.  Overnight at Salkantay Lodge

Optional Activities for the day

  • Chakana excursion (subject to additional cost): Horseback/hiking combo up the steep hills adjacent the lodge. The destination—a dramatic lookout point over the Salkantay River Valley marked by an oversized Inca Chakana (cross). This excursion will replace the hike to the glacier lake. Duration: Approximately 5 hours (1.5 – 2 hours on horseback)
  • Horseback riding (subject to additional cost): After lunch, spend a leisurely afternoon exploring Soraypampa on horseback.  Duration: Approximately 2 hours.

Day 6 | Crossing the Salkantay Pass

Following an early start, embark on the ascent towards the Salkantay Pass. The journey commences with a circuit around Humantay Peak, gradually navigating expansive plateaus connected by imposing boulders, remnants of the once-divided Rio Blanco Valley. The final and most challenging leg of the ascent entails conquering the mountain switchbacks leading to the pass, the pinnacle of the trek at 15,213 feet (4,636 meters) above sea level.

The adventure continues with a striking descent through fields adorned with substantial boulders and natural stone formations, often cloaked in fog. Take a moment to rest and replenish with trail mix before embarking on the final hike through the area’s picturesque countryside. Traverse rolling hills and marsh-like plateaus until reaching the Wayra Lodge at Wayraccmachay, where you can cleanse away trail residue and savor a delectable hot lunch.

In the afternoon, unwind in the Jacuzzi or relish the awe-inspiring views of the lofty snow-capped peaks that surround you.  Overnight at Wayra Lodge.

Day 7 | Descending into the Cloud Forest

Following a leisurely breakfast at Wayra Lodge, continue your descent towards the cloud forest, tracing the path along the banks of the Salkantay River amidst increasingly lush scenery. As you journey, expect to feel the warm air rising from the jungle’s edge, accompanied by the vibrant presence of colorful butterflies and exquisite orchids. Along the trail, encounter more local Andean communities, passing by their humble dwellings and rustic fences.

Around midday, arrive at Colpa Lodge, situated on a lofty promontory where three rivers converge. Here, the Colpa staff will welcome you with a traditional Peruvian Pachamanca lunch, prepared using hot stones in a subterranean oven. Following lunch, indulge in an afternoon of relaxation, basking in the sun or unwinding in the outdoor hot tub while marveling at the sweeping vistas of the verdant mountains that envelop you.  Overnight at Colpa Lodge.

 Altitude: (9,414’ / 2,870m), Trekking Time: Approximately 3 – 4 hours, Hiking Level: Easy to moderate

 

Day 8 | Following the Santa Teresa River Valley

Today’s itinerary entails a scenic hike through the Santa Teresa River Valley, traversing a gentle trail that meanders amidst fertile fruit orchards and intersects streams from glacier-fed waterfalls. Take a moment to rejuvenate alongside the river with a trail mix break, then press onward for another hour until you reach the designated meeting point for pickup by an MLP transport vehicle.

After a brief drive, arrive at the base of the Llactapata Inca Trail steps leading to Lucma Lodge. Relish a delightful lunch upon arrival at the lodge, followed by a visit to an organic coffee plantation. Renowned for producing some of the finest organic coffees globally, these plantations offer insight into the region’s rich coffee culture.

As you transition to Lucmabamba, you’ll notice a climate change characterized by heightened humidity and warm air, signaling your proximity to the Amazon Jungle’s edge.  Overnight at Lucma Lodge

Day 9 | Lucmabamba – First Views of Machu Picchu

Following breakfast, commence your journey from Lucma Lodge, embarking on a 2-3 hour ascent through the cloud forest along a trail predominantly comprised of original Inca steps. Enveloped by lush green canopies created by the towering trees, the tranquil ambiance is complemented by the soothing sound of rushing water, indicating the proximity of the river.

Your primary objective today is reaching the peak, the final ascent before descending to the Aobamba River Valley, which serves as the conduit to Machu Picchu. Upon reaching the Llactapata Pass at an elevation of 8,974 feet (2,736 meters), be rewarded with a southeast-facing vista of Machu Picchu, a rare and privileged sight enjoyed by few travelers. After exploring Llactapata, the Inca tambo that signifies the pass, indulge in a picnic lunch at a scenic mountain lookout point offering panoramic views.

Embark on the final descent along a zigzagging trail through verdant bamboo forests, diverse fruit orchards, and additional coffee plantations. Celebrate as you traverse the bridge over the roaring Aobamba River, marking the culmination of your trek as you make your way to the Hidroelectrica train station. Here, board a picturesque one-hour train journey to the town of Aguas Calientes, nestled on the banks of the Urubamba River at the base of Machu Picchu.  Overnight at Inkaterra Pueblo Hotel.

Day 10 | The Citadel of Machu Picchu – End of Salkantay Trek

Your journey to Machu Picchu begins with a morning rollicking uphill bus ride. As you enter the ‘sanctuary’ (as locals refer to it), prepare to be awed by the imposing, skillful architecture of the Watchtower, the Temple of the Sun, and the royal Inca residences, among others. After a two-hour guided tour, you will have free time to explore on your own, including a hike up Huayna Picchu Mountain** for dramatic views that stretch from the Urubamba River Valley to the edge of the Amazon Jungle.  At some point, be sure to take a moment and sit quietly–listen to the wind, meditate, and absorb the mystical energy that envelops you. After the visit, you will have lunch in Aguas Calientes before a scenic Vistadome train ride to Ollantaytambo (approximately 1.5 hours) and a vehicle transfer to your hotel in Cusco (approximately 1.5 hours). As night falls and you arrive amidst the hustle and bustle of the city, you will be touched by a feeling of peace and rejuvenation that will linger long after your journey home.

**Note: Tickets for Huayna Picchu Mt. (8,924’ / 2,720m) may be available subject to additional cost (an extra day is necessary to visit the place). If Huayna Picchu permits are not available for your desired date, you may opt for a hike up Machu Picchu Mt. (10,112 / 3,082m), located next to the Machu Picchu Citadel on the southern side. Day 11 | Morning free, Lunch at UNU and afternoon Visit Maras and Moray

Indulge in a tranquil morning at leisure amidst the breathtaking beauty of the Sacred Valley at Hotel Sol y Luna. Awaken to the serene ambiance of the Andean mountains and immerse yourself in the vibrant colors of the surrounding landscape. Take leisurely strolls through the lush gardens, adorned with vibrant flowers and towering trees, or simply relax by the sparkling poolside, basking in the warmth of the Peruvian sun. Treat yourself to a rejuvenating spa session or savor a delicious breakfast featuring local specialties, prepared with fresh ingredients sourced from the valley.

Lunch is served at UNU Restaurant, located in the Sacred Valley of Peru.  The prix fixe menu allows guests to savor the flavors of the local cuisine which provides an opportunity to experience authentic Peruvian food.  The restaurant is known for its delightful views of the mountains, creating a serene environment for guests to enjoy their meals.

After lunch, a captivating journey takes us through the Sacred Valley of the Incas, delving into the ancient traditions of the region. Our first stop takes us to the mesmerizing salt fields of Maras, where natural springs yield an abundant harvest of salt. Witness the breathtaking sight of endless terraces adorned with crystalline salt deposits, reflecting the vibrant hues of the sun’s rays. Gain insight into the remarkable ingenuity of the Incas as you learn about their innovative methods of resource generation.

Continuing our exploration, we venture to the enigmatic Moray terraces, an architectural marvel nestled amidst the Andean landscape. Marvel at the intricate circular terraces arranged in immense cone-shaped depressions, resembling nature’s own fingerprints. Discover the ingenious agricultural techniques employed by the Incas to adapt plants to diverse climatic conditions, utilizing the microclimates created by the terraces at varying heights.

Day 12 | Back to Lima for departure – Hotel for Day Use included

Transfer to Cusco airport for flight to Lima. Airport reception and room for day use at the Ramada Costa del Sol hotel at the Lima airport until your flight departure.

Important information regarding the Salkantay Trek:

The trek is fully private for the first three and last two days. During the middle portion, you will join a group of up to 14 trekkers.  The Salkantay to Machu Picchu Trek has limited access to car transportation on Days 4, 5, 7, 8, and 9. Furthermore, emergency horses are available to assist hikers along the Trail.  Our trip leaders are Expert Bilingual Peruvian Mountain guides.  If you wish to have a fully private experience for the Salkantay Trek itself a surcharge of $2,795 applies for the whole party up to 6 people.

All meals and beverages are included at the Lodges as specified.  A premium selection of wines, spirits and liquors are offered at an additional cost. Soft drinks and alcoholic beverages are subject to an additional cost at our partner properties in Lima, the Sacred Valley and Aguas Calientes.

In consideration of the adventurous nature of the trip, the risks associated with alcohol consumption, and the importance of maintaining positive group dynamics, we encourage guests to enjoy alcoholic beverages in moderation.  Green Planet Expeditions and our tour operator reserve the right to modify or suspend a guest’s access to alcohol and/or trip partially or entirely if the guest’s health or safety may be at risk due to excessive alcohol consumption.
