Itinerary in Detail

Day 1 | Arrival to Havana, Cuba

Welcome to Havana!! Your private guide and driver will meet you at the airport to take you to your accommodation. After you settle into some of the city’s best bed and breakfasts, known locally as casas particulares, you will get a comprehensive orientation to prepare you for your time in Cuba If time allows it explore the neighborhood, and immerse yourself in the lively culture of Cuba at your own pace with your guideWhen available to the public, your guide will take you to the Fabrica de Arte Cubano (FAC), a dynamic and innovative cultural hub in Havana, where art, music, and creativity converge under one roof. This converted factory space showcases contemporary art exhibitions, live performances, film screenings, and more, offering a unique and immersive cultural experience. On the same premises, Tierra Restaurant complements the artistic atmosphere with a menu that features both Cuban and international cuisine, providing a delightful culinary journey for visitors to savor amidst the vibrant art scene and where dinner will be servedOvernight at La Reserva Casa Particular or similar.

Day 2 | Las Terrazas, Sierra del Rosario

Following a leisurely breakfast, we will embark on our journey westward to Las Terrazas, located in the Sierra del Rosario mountains.  Designated as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, Las Terrazas was established in 1968 as part of Fidel Castro’s reforestation initiative, aimed at restoring areas that had been heavily logged since the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors. Once dominated by coffee plantations, the region now spans 5,000 hectares and is home to over 117 bird species, including 12 endemics such as the vibrant tocororo and zorzal.  We’ll begin our exploration of Las Terrazas with a scenic 5-kilometer (3.11 miles) hike along the Sendero La Serafina, a trail that winds through the reforested landscape and past the remnants of the historic Saint Serafina plantation.  After our afternoon adventure, we’ll settle into our accommodations for the evening and enjoy a traditional Cuban dinner, offering a true taste of local cuisine.  Overnight at Casa Particular or similar.

Day 3 | Valle de Viñales

After an early breakfast, we depart westward for one of Cuba’s most picturesque national parks—Valle de Viñales. Nestled within the rolling hills of the Sierra de los Órganos, this UNESCO World Heritage Site is home to a diverse array of unique ecosystems. Throughout the day, we will explore the valley’s varied landscapes, gaining insights into Cuba’s iconic tobacco industry and the geological forces that shaped this remarkable region.  The valley is renowned for its striking mogotes—towering limestone formations that seem to erupt from the earth, a dramatic result of erosion that began around 160 million years ago. One of the most iconic features of the valley are the Mogotes dos Hermanas (Two Sisters), twin mogotes that stand side by side, watching over vast stretches of flat farmland.  Beneath these mogotes lies a landscape dominated by Cuba’s prized tobacco fields, their rich, umber soil lined with rows of tall plants bearing broad, vibrant green leaves. This stunning sight represents Cuba’s legendary tobacco industry, which has achieved near-mythical status worldwide.  We’ll enjoy a farm-to-table lunch at an organic restaurant before heading to a local tobacco plantation for a firsthand look at the cultivation process. In the afternoon, we visit a despalillo (tobacco processing factory), where we will learn about the curing and fermentation techniques that follow the harvest.  By late afternoon, after a day of exploration and fresh air, we return to our accommodations, reflecting on the beauty and traditions of this UNESCO-protected valley.  Overnight at Casa Particular, Bed and Breakfast or authorized hotel.

Day 4 | Hemingway’s Finca Vigia, Bay of Pigs, Presentation

We begin our journey with a drive east to the outskirts of Havana, where we visit Finca Vigía, the former home of Ernest Hemingway. It was here that the renowned author lived for two decades, writing some of his most celebrated works. After exploring the house and grounds, we’ll enjoy lunch at a nearby paladar (private restaurant) before continuing our drive southeast toward the Bay of Pigs.

Our destination is Playa Larga, a peaceful village located on the shores of the Bahía de Cochinos (Bay of Pigs), famously known for the 1961 CIA-backed invasion that took place here.  Upon arrival, we check into our charming accommodations, a welcoming Casa that reflects the warmth of the local community. Later, we are joined by Frank Medina, Director of Zapata National Park, for an engaging presentation. Frank will share insights into the challenges of balancing tourism and conservation in the park, as well as its many successes. The Ciénaga de Zapata is not only a designated national park but also a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, home to expansive forests and mangrove wetlands that remain largely untouched.  The park is a haven for wildlife, including crocodiles, iguanas, flamingos, and wild boars. It is also a prime destination for birdwatchers, with endemic species such as the Cuban pygmy owl, bee hummingbird, and Zapata rail thriving in the area. After an enlightening discussion, we’ll enjoy a festive dinner, savoring the flavors of authentic Cuban cuisine.  Overnight at Casa Enrique or similar.

Day 5 | Exploring Zapata National Park & the Bay of Pigs

We begin our day with an exploration of Zapata National Park, one of Cuba’s most ecologically significant areas. Our first stop takes us along the coast to a prime snorkeling location, where vibrant fish and healthy coral reefs provide a fascinating glimpse into Cuba’s marine conservation efforts. The country is home to some of the healthiest reef systems in the Caribbean, making this an exceptional opportunity to learn about ongoing preservation initiatives.  Next, we venture onto a hidden trail that winds through the forest, passing by cenotes (sinkholes) typical of the region’s limestone geology. This area is also renowned for birdwatching, and we may be fortunate enough to spot species such as the Key West quail dove, Cuban bullfinch, and Cuban peewee.  Our journey continues to Playa Girón, a small town known for its historical significance. We visit the Museum of the Bay of Pigs Invasion, which recounts the events of the infamous 1961 invasion. The town’s name originates from the French pirate Gilbert Girón, whose decapitation at the hands of locals is commemorated in the area’s history.  After lunch at a local restaurant, we drive eastward to Trinidad, one of Cuba’s most beautifully preserved colonial towns. Known for its old-world charm, Trinidad has retained much of its historical character, eschewing modern developments to preserve its colonial ambiance. We enjoy a walking tour of this UNESCO World Heritage Site, where the grandeur of the past is still evident in the Italian frescoes, ornate chandeliers, and bone china that grace the plantation-era mansions.

Day 6 | Exploring the Sierra Escambray and Parque Natural Topes de Collantes

We begin our day with an early departure, heading into the rugged, pine-covered slopes of the Sierra Escambray (also known as the Guamuhaya Mountains). Nestled within this mountain range is the Gran Parque Natural Topes de Collantes—a protected natural reserve, which, although not officially designated as a national park, is safeguarded by the Cuban government alongside the four smaller parks that form the larger Topes reserve.  Depending on weather conditions, group ability, and current trail conditions, we’ll embark on a guided hike with a local park expert. One option is the Salto del Caburní trail, a 5-kilometer (3.11 miles) round-trip hike that leads to a breathtaking 62-meter (203 feet) waterfall. The waterfall cascades down cliffs into clear swimming holes below, creating a stunning natural spectacle. Adventurous visitors may even be tempted to take a jump into the chasm, where the water rushes through the rocks. If water levels are low, we may opt for the Vegas Grandes hike, which winds through lush ferns and pine forests, eventually reaching another beautiful waterfall and swimming pool.  Another option is the Sendero La Batata (Sweet Potato Trail), a 6-kilometer (3.73 miles) hike through dense forest to a prehistoric cave, where an underwater river flows. This trail offers an immersive experience through forests rich in mosses and lichens, with crystal-clear pools and cascading waterfalls.  By mid to late afternoon, we return to Trinidad, where we have some free time before dinner. We conclude the day with a visit to the home and studio of Yudith Vidal, a renowned local artist, for a deeper look into the creative spirit of the region.  Overnight at Casa Particular (Bed & Breakfast) or local hotel.

Day 7 | Cienfuegos Botanical Gardens and City

We depart Trinidad and travel west along the coast, with the towering Sierra Escambray mountains to the north and the turquoise waters of the Caribbean to the south. Our first stop is the mouth of the Bay of Cienfuegos, where you’ll have the option to enjoy a leisurely kayak paddle to the historic Fortress of Our Lady of the Angels of Jagua. Built in 1742 by order of King Philip V of Spain, this fortress was designed to defend against pirates that once roamed the Caribbean coast. After our paddle and fortress visit, we will dine at a seaside restaurant renowned for its fresh and flavorful seafood.  Following lunch, we drive a short distance to the Cienfuegos Botanical Gardens, where we’ll enjoy a guided tour with a local specialist. Founded in 1899 by New Englander Edward Atkns, the garden was later leased to Harvard University for 99 years. This lush botanical haven is home to over 1,400 species of trees and plants from around the world, providing a serene and educational walk through its diverse collections.  We continue on to the coastal port town of Cienfuegos, known as the “Pearl of the South” for its elegant architecture and stunning seaside views. Founded in the 1820s, Cienfuegos was settled by French immigrants from Bordeaux and Louisiana, and its distinctive French colonial influence is evident throughout the city. As a UNESCO World Heritage Site, Cienfuegos boasts impressive structures such as the Teatro Tomás Terry, a grand 19th-century theater, and other architectural gems. We’ll take an informative walking tour through the town, exploring the Prado—a beautiful mansion-lined promenade—and other notable landmarks.  Overnight at a Casa Particular (Bed & Breakfast) or local hotel

Day 8 | Havana

We depart Cienfuegos for the scenic 3-hour drive to Havana, Cuba’s vibrant capital. Upon arrival, we begin with a walking tour of Havana Vieja (Old Havana), a UNESCO World Heritage site, where we’ll explore the city’s rich colonial history. We stop for lunch at one of Havana’s top paladares (private restaurants), where you can savor authentic Cuban cuisine in a local setting.  Refreshed, we continue our exploration, strolling along the bustling Obispo Street and visiting significant landmarks such as the Palacio de los Capitanes Generales, the Museo de la Ciudad, the Plaza de Armas, the Plaza de la Catedral, and the Catedral de San Cristóbal de La Habana. As we walk, our guide will share stories of Havana’s turbulent past—from colonial plundering to revolutionary struggles—while also shedding light on the modern-day Cuban experience and the aspirations of the people who call this vibrant city home. After an afternoon of exploration, we enjoy a classic car ride through Vedado and Miramar, two of Havana’s most iconic neighborhoods, offering a glimpse into the city’s diverse architecture and culture. The ride provides a unique way to see the city’s landmarks and local life. The day concludes with a delicious dinner at one of Havana’s finest paladares, where you can indulge in a memorable meal. For those interested in experiencing Havana’s lively music scene, there are several options to choose from. One popular spot is Fábrica de Arte Cubano, a trendy venue showcasing Cuba’s cutting-edge art and live performances. Alternatively, you can enjoy live jazz at one of the city’s renowned clubs or explore other vibrant nightlife offerings.  Overnight at Casa Particular (Bed & Breakfast) or local hotel

Day 9 | Hasta la Vista Havana!

Prepare for your departure by transferring to the airport, where you have the opportunity to cash in any remaining CUCs at the gift shop or exchange them for dollars. As you await your return flight, take a moment to reflect on the incredible memories and experiences you’ve gathered during your time in Cuba. We sincerely hope that this journey has left an indelible mark on your heart. Safe travels on your journey back home!
