Itinerary in Detail

Day 1 | Arrival In San Jose

Upon your arrival at Juan Santamaría International Airport, your Costa Rican adventure begins seamlessly. After disembarking, follow the signs to the immigration area where you’ll have your passport checked and stamped. Once through, proceed to the baggage claim area to collect your luggage, with complimentary carts available to assist you. After gathering your bags, pass through customs, placing your luggage on the conveyor belt for X-ray screening and handing over your completed customs form. Once cleared, you’ll exit the terminal, where it’s best to avoid taxi solicitations and instead look for your Green Planet Expeditions driver, who will be waiting to ensure a smooth transfer to your destination. Settle into your luxury accommodation in San José, where you can relax and unwind after your journey, enjoying a restful night before the next day’s adventures. Overnight at Grano de Oro

Day 2 | San Jose to Tortuguero

After breakfast, your luxury Costa Rica adventure trip truly begins. A private driver will collect you at Grano de Oro and transfer you to the local airport for a short but spectacular flight to Tortuguero — often called the Amazon of Costa Rica.

Soar above lush rainforests and winding rivers as you approach this remote wildlife haven. Upon landing, a lodge representative will welcome you for a scenic boat ride through the iconic canals of Tortuguero National Park, teeming with sloths, monkeys, and vibrant tropical birds.

At Tortuga Lodge & Gardens, settle into your jungle retreat and enjoy a gourmet lunch. Later, explore the cultural side of Tortuguero Village on a guided visit to the local school, artisan shops, Afro-Caribbean neighborhoods, and the Sea Turtle Conservancy. Learn how this former hunting village became a model of conservation.  Overnight at Tortuga Lodge & Gardens.

Day 3 | Tortuguero

Begin with an early breakfast at the lodge. Then, set out on a three-hour boat tour through Tortuguero National Park with a local naturalist guide. Explore remote creeks and quiet lagoons. Watch for howler monkeys, Northern Jacanas, caimans, and otters. Each trip offers a new window into rainforest life.

In the evening, join a two-hour guided night walk in Tortuga Lodge’s private nature reserve. Gear up with rubber boots, a rain poncho, and flashlight. Wear long pants and sleeves, and apply insect repellent. On this walk, you may encounter nocturnal species and the unique Strawberry Poison Dart Frog. Return to the lodge by 7 p.m. for a delightful dinner. Overnight at Tortuga Lodge & Gardens.

Day 4 | Tortuguero to Arenal

After breakfast, enjoy a scenic boat transfer back to Caño Blanco Dock. Here, your private naturalist guide will join you for the rest of your journey.

The 4.5 to 5-hour drive to Arenal is a highlight in itself. Travel through lush jungles, banana plantations, and rolling hills. The landscape opens to reveal the majestic Arenal Volcano in the distance.

Upon arrival at Amor Arenal, settle into your luxurious rainforest suite. Take time to unwind, explore the resort’s private trails, or relax in its wellness facilities.

Later in the day, visit Ecotermales Fortuna, famous for its natural volcanic hot springs. These geothermal pools are rich in minerals and perfect for soothing tired muscles and improving circulation.

Enjoy a delicious dinner surrounded by tropical gardens and warm, ambient lighting. Your guide will explain the volcanic processes that fuel these springs, making this experience both relaxing and enriching. Overnight at Amor Arenal

Day 5 | Arenal – Waterfalls, Volcanoes & Local Flavors

Begin the day with a guided hike to La Fortuna Waterfall. Descend 500 steps through the rainforest with your naturalist guide, learning about the native plants and wildlife.

At the bottom, take in the view of the 70-meter cascade plunging into a turquoise pool. Cool off with a swim or simply enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Your guide will share stories about the river and its role in the local ecosystem.

Next, enjoy a traditional Costa Rican lunch at a local restaurant. Dishes are prepared with fresh regional ingredients — from savory plantains and vegetables to slow-cooked meats.

In the afternoon, explore the Arenal 1968 Lava Flow. Walk along hardened volcanic trails as your guide recounts the eruption’s history and its impact on the region. The landscape is both dramatic and full of life.

Stop to take in sweeping views of Arenal Lake and the volcano itself. Learn how ecosystems have adapted to this volcanic terrain. Overnig at Amor Arenal

Day 6 | Journey to Manuel Antonio & Coastal Indulgence

Bid farewell to the misty cloud forest and begin your journey to Costa Rica’s spectacular Pacific Coast. During the scenic drive to Manuel Antonio, your guide will highlight natural landmarks — from crocodile-inhabited rivers to charming cultural villages.

This destination adds the perfect beachside balance to your luxury Costa Rica adventure trip. Upon arrival, check in at Makanda by the Sea, a boutique, adults-only eco-luxury resort nestled in the rainforest with sweeping views of the Pacific Ocean.

Spend your afternoon relaxing by the infinity pool, exploring nearby jungle trails, or booking a spa treatment overlooking the sea. For the culinary-inclined, Manuel Antonio’s vibrant food scene is a must: from traditional gallo pinto and fresh seafood to innovative fusion cuisine.

As the sun begins to set, indulge in a gourmet dinner with panoramic ocean views, ending your day with elegance and serenity. Overnigh at Makanda by the Sea

Day 7 | Kayaking at Isla Damas & Custom Beach Adventures

Today’s included adventure is a kayaking tour through Isla Damas Mangroves, a unique ecosystem teeming with monkeys, sloths, and exotic birds. Paddle through the serene waterways as your guide shares insights into the delicate balance of this coastal habitat. The rest of the day is yours to customize with a variety of options:

  • Manuel Antonio National Park: Spot monkeys, iguanas, and sloths along scenic trails leading to pristine beaches.
  • Horseback Riding: Explore hidden beaches and jungle trails on a guided horseback adventure.
  • Quepos Cultural and Social City Tour

Day 8 | Departure

On your final day in Costa Rica, your dedicated naturalist guide will join you one last time for the journey from Manuel Antonio to San José. As you travel through the breathtaking scenery of Costa Rica’s diverse landscapes, your guide will share fascinating insights into the regions you pass through—pointing out the transition from the coastal forests to the mountainous terrain, and the agricultural fields of the Central Valley. This scenic 3 to 3.5-hour drive offers a final opportunity to soak in Costa Rica’s natural beauty, with a chance to spot wildlife along the way and reflect on your adventure. Upon arrival at Juan Santamaría International Airport, your guide will ensure a smooth drop-off and assist with any last-minute details, leaving you with unforgettable memories of your time exploring Costa Rica’s rich biodiversity and landscapes. Be sure to arrive at least three hours before your departure for a seamless and stress-free check-in process. Safe travels and we hope to welcome you back to Costa Rica soon!
